Devold Nansen 100% Norwegian Wool Crew Neck Sweater - Arctic Expedition Heritage
The Devold Nansen Crew Neck is expedition-grade Norwegian wool knitwear with authentic polar exploration heritage. Named after Arctic explorer Fridtjof Nansen, who wore Devold during the first crossing of Greenland in 1888, this sweater delivers proven performance for extreme conditions. Available in six contemporary styles, it performs "in the toughest conditions or makes you stand out in the streets."
1888 Greenland Expedition Heritage When Fridtjof Nansen faced 560 kilometres of Greenland's ice cap—considered impossible at the time—he trusted Devold wool. The same material Norwegian fishermen relied on for survival in brutal maritime conditions. The expedition's success established Devold as the gold standard for expedition-grade outdoor clothing.
100% Pure Norwegian Wool (32-36 Micron) Robust, broad wool fibers from Norwegian sheep provide exceptional warmth-to-weight insulation, superior durability against abrasion, proven warmth retention when wet (unlike down or cotton), and natural temperature regulation. Benefits include moisture-wicking, odour resistance requiring less washing, breathability, flame resistance, and decades of durability. Features ribbed cuffs and hem, pre-washed for softness.
Classic Crew Neck Versatility Timeless round neckline works for layering under shells for expeditions, over collared shirts for heritage style, under jackets for commuting, or standalone for casual wear. Equally suitable for mountain hiking and urban settings.
Six Nansen Styles Available Crew neck, high neck/turtleneck, zip neck, button neck, split seam, and women's specific cuts.
When to Wear It Extreme outdoor activities (winter mountaineering, Arctic camping, backcountry skiing, ice fishing), everyday cold weather (layering under parkas, freezing temperature wear, après-ski, winter travel), and heritage outdoor styling. Temperature range: 0°C to 10°C (32°F to 50°F) standalone, -10°C to 5°C (14°F to 41°F) over base layers, extreme cold under shells.
Why Choose the Nansen Crew Neck? Authentic 1888 polar expedition heritage, proven Arctic performance, thick construction for serious cold, natural materials superior to synthetics, and timeless Norwegian design trusted by explorers for over 135 years.

Devold Size Guide
The size guide indicates what body measurements will fit the garments as they are planned to be worn. Individually one may choose a smaller size for a tighter fit or a bigger size for a loose fit. Devold underwear and accessories are generally made in elastic materials, mid-layers in more stable qualities. The garment measures will differ according to the elasticity in each quality and intended fitting - the size guide refers to body measurement for correct fit.
A few precautions
- When bust/chest measures indicate different size than height, follow the bust measurement
- When hip and waist indicate different sizes, follow the hip measurement
- When height indicate two sizes more than width measure, we recommend to chose the size in between.
