Ultra-Lightweight Merino Base Layer for High-Intensity Winter Activities

The Devold® Wool Mesh 190 Men's Shirt is a technical base layer engineered for mountaineers, ski tourers, and winter athletes who demand maximum performance from their thermal underwear. At just 190 g/m², this Norwegian-designed merino wool top delivers exceptional moisture management and temperature regulation for high-output activities in cold conditions.

Advanced Moisture-Wicking Mesh Technology

How Wool Mesh Works: The innovative mesh construction creates a three-dimensional channel system against your skin. During intense efforts—whether skinning uphill, ice climbing, or winter trail running—the mesh actively pushes excess heat and perspiration away from your body, keeping you dry and comfortable even during maximum exertion.

When you stop for breaks or the temperature drops, those same mesh air pockets trap warm air between your skin and outer layers, providing instant insulation exactly when you need it. This intelligent dual-function design makes it ideal for stop-start alpine activities where temperature regulation is critical.

Premium Fine Merino Wool Construction

Material Specifications:

  • 100% Pure Merino Wool - No synthetic blends
  • Fine Grade: 18.7 micron - Exceptionally soft against skin, no itching
  • Weight: 190 g/m² - Ultralight for multi-day expeditions
  • Colour: Caviar (deep black/charcoal) - Versatile and practical
  • Highly elastic - Four-way stretch for unrestricted movement

Strategic Flat-Knitted Comfort Panels

The latest generation Wool Mesh features flat-knitted reinforcement panels strategically positioned at high-movement areas:

Elbow panels - Eliminate bulk and chafing during trekking pole use, ice tool swings, and climbing movements
Knee integration - Seamless comfort for approach hikes and scrambling
Enhanced fit - Panels provide structure whilst maintaining the breathability of mesh zones

These panels deliver a more comfortable, athletic fit that moves with you rather than against you during technical movements.

Ideal Activities & Conditions

Perfect for:

  • Ski touring & backcountry skiing - Alpine ascents and descents in varied conditions
  • Winter mountaineering - Scottish Highlands, Norwegian mountains, Alps, Rockies, Southern Alps
  • Ice climbing - High-output vertical pursuits in cold environments
  • Snowshoeing & winter hiking - Multi-day hut-to-hut tours and mountain expeditions
  • Cold-weather trail running - Mountain running in freezing conditions
  • Arctic expeditions - Polar travel and extreme cold-weather activities
  • Cross-country skiing - Nordic skiing and skate skiing

Optimal Temperature Range: Works effectively from -20°C to +10°C depending on activity intensity and layering. The mesh design adapts to your output level.

Technical Base Layer Performance

Moisture Management: During a typical ski tour ascent, you can generate significant perspiration. The Wool Mesh 190 excels at moving this moisture away from your skin through capillary action, keeping your core temperature stable and preventing the dangerous chill that occurs when you stop moving in damp clothing.

Quick-Drying: Unlike cotton or heavier wool base layers, the mesh construction and fine merino fibres dry remarkably quickly—essential for multi-day tours or when you're starting cold morning climbs in yesterday's base layer.

Temperature Regulation: The holy grail of alpine base layers is maintaining comfort during varied intensity. Pushing hard uphill? The mesh breathes and wicks. Stopped for a summit photo? The air pockets insulate. This is where Wool Mesh 190 truly excels.

Layering System Integration

As a Base Layer: The Wool Mesh 190 works perfectly as the foundation of a three-layer system:

  • Base: Wool Mesh 190 (moisture management and primary insulation)
  • Mid: Fleece or insulated jacket (additional warmth)
  • Shell: Waterproof/windproof outer (weather protection)

The 190 g/m² weight strikes the ideal balance—substantial enough for cold conditions, light enough to prevent overheating during intense activity.

Size & Fit

Athletic fit designed to sit close to the skin for optimal moisture management whilst allowing full freedom of movement. The high elasticity of the merino wool means the shirt stretches and recovers without losing shape.

Fit recommendation: Choose your normal size for a performance fit, or size up if you prefer a slightly looser feel or plan to wear over another thin base layer for extreme cold.

Care & Longevity

Merino wool is naturally low-maintenance:

  • Requires less frequent washing than synthetics (air out between uses)
  • Machine washable on wool cycle with wool detergent
  • Naturally antimicrobial and odour-resistant
  • Improves with age as fibres soften
  • Designed to last for years of mountain adventures

Why Choose Wool Over Synthetics?

Natural Performance: Merino wool regulates temperature better than polyester base layers, remains warm when wet (unlike cotton), doesn't retain odours like synthetic fabrics, and won't melt against hot stove pipes in mountain huts.

Sustainability: As a natural, renewable, biodegradable fibre, merino wool represents a more environmentally responsible choice than petroleum-based synthetic base layers.

Comfort: Fine 18.7-micron merino feels luxurious against skin—no itching, no clammy synthetic feel, just natural comfort.

Devold Size Guide
The size guide indicates what body measurements will fit the garments as they are planned to be worn. Individually one may choose a smaller size for a tighter fit or a bigger size for a loose fit. Devold underwear and accessories are generally made in elastic materials, mid-layers in more stable qualities. The garment measures will differ according to the elasticity in each quality and intended fitting - the size guide refers to body measurement for correct fit.

A few precautions
- When bust/chest measures indicate different size than height, follow the bust measurement
- When hip and waist indicate different sizes, follow the hip measurement
- When height indicate two sizes more than width measure, we recommend to chose the size in between.
